Darwin’s death in X-Men: First Class has always felt strange because his entire mutation is built around one rule: adapt to survive. In the movie, his body automatically changes depending on the threat. He grows gills underwater, hardens his skin, and keeps cycling through different forms when Sebastian Shaw forces Havok’s absorbed energy into him. He ultimately explodes, but if he had survived that moment, the comic version of Darwin suggests he could have become one of the hardest mutants in the entire franchise to kill.
His Body Would Keep Inventing New Powers
The biggest reason is that Darwin doesn’t really have one fixed power. His mutation can create whatever adaptation is necessary to keep him alive. In the comics, he has become fireproof, survived without oxygen in space, transformed his body into energy, regenerated from lethal injuries, and developed completely new abilities depending on the danger he was facing.
That means every new threat could potentially force his mutation to evolve in a different direction.
Hulk Was So Powerful That Darwin Simply Teleported Away
One of the best examples comes when Darwin faces Hulk. His body initially tries to adapt by absorbing Hulk’s gamma radiation, but Hulk contains far too much energy for that to work.
So Darwin’s mutation comes up with another solution:
Teleport away.
Instead of making him stronger than Hulk, his powers simply invent the one ability needed to make sure Hulk cannot kill him.
He Even Adapted to a Goddess of Death
The comics pushed that idea even further when Darwin encountered Hela.
His mutation adapted to the Goddess of Death by transforming him into something closer to a death deity himself. At that point, his power stops feeling like simple physical adaptation and starts becoming almost limitless.
Fire can make him fireproof. Space can make him stop needing oxygen. Hulk can make him teleport. A death goddess can force him to evolve into something capable of surviving death itself.
So How Powerful Could First Class Darwin Have Become?
If the Darwin from First Class had survived Shaw’s attack and continued developing his mutation alongside the X-Men, he probably wouldn’t become the strongest mutant in terms of raw destructive power.
He could become something even more frustrating: a mutant whose body keeps changing the rules every time someone discovers a new way to kill him.
Maybe Darwin wasn’t actually too weak to survive in First Class. Maybe his mutation simply hadn’t evolved far enough yet.
