Wonder Woman vs. Scarlet Witch

Wonder Woman is one of the most well-known strong female characters in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), while Scarlet Witch is sometimes considered the most powerful member of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Have you ever wondered what would happen if these two butt-kicking women faced off against each other? Who would come out on top?

Scarlet Witch’s incredible magic powers give her the edge in this competition, but Wonder Woman has her own set of strengths. There is one scenario that might allow her to beat Scarlet Witch–if she can catch her by surprise.

Though she grew up sheltered from the outside world, an encounter with Steve Trevor, an American soldier during World War I, convinced her to join the fight and use her powers for the good of humanity.

Her efforts led to the end of the war, but she spent the next several decades living mostly in isolation after Steve’s death, and working at various museums under the name Diana Prince.

In 1984, she discovered an artifact called the Dreamstone, which granted one wish to anyone who asked, but with devastating consequences. She wished Steve back into existence, but her powers weakened as the world faced threats of nuclear war.

Steve convinced her to relinquish her wish, her powers returned, and the threat was abated.

Years later, while working at the Louvre, she went up against Lex Luthor and found herself in an alliance with Batman and Superman to fight against Doomsday.

Following these events, she became one of the founding members of the Justice League.

Wanda / The Scarlet Witch Origin & Powers Explained

Wanda Maximoff came from Sokovia, where she and her twin brother, Pietro, watched their parents die when they were children.

When they were older, they joined Hydra and were subjected to experiments which increased their powers. Though initially opposed to the Avengers, they switched sides and joined them in their fight against Ultron.

She experienced the tragic loss of her brother and, later, was forced to kill her lover, Vision, in an effort to keep the Mind Stone out of Thanos’ hands. However, the villain resurrected Vision, then killed him again by taking the Mind Stone from his head.

Though Wanda perished with half of the universe when Thanos snapped, she was later resurrected with the Avengers reversed this event. She fought alongside the Avengers against Thanos in the Battle of Earth.

Later, she used her magic to create an artificial reality where she was married to Vision and they had twin sons. During this time, she discovered her Chaos Magic and received the title of Scarlet Witch.

However, she is forced to destroy her preferred reality to save the people of Westview, New Jersey, who she unwittingly endangered with her Hex.

Her grief and longing for her family led her to extreme measures, however, as she attempted to steal alternate reality versions of her sons, killing Masters of the Mystic Arts, and the Illuminati.

Wonder Woman’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Wonder Woman's Strongest Moments

Wonder Woman possesses many physical and mental strengths, plus an array of weapons.

She is strong, fast, and has superhuman reflexes. She also appears impervious to the effects of fatigue and exhaustion.

During her youth, she received combat training as an Amazon warrior, and her innate demigoddess abilities as the daughter of Zeus increased her fighting skills.

She fought with many weapons, including swords and her famous Lasso of Truth. The gauntlet-like Bracelets of Submission, which she wore on her wrists, enabled her to deflect bullets and energy blasts.

Her mental strength and fortitude augment all of her other powers and abilities. She is intelligent, refuses to be intimidated, and pushes forward through pain and loss with an inner courage that makes her nearly unbeatable.

Weaknesses

Of course, no superhero is perfect, and Wonder Woman has her own set of weaknesses.

Though she is  powerful and durable, she is not bulletproof. This is why she must use her bracelets to deflect gunfire and other projectiles.

She is also susceptible to various poisons and gasses, much as any other human would be.

Finally, though her bracelets allow her to block bullets, they keep her full power under wraps. Therefore, they also serve as one of her primary weaknesses.

Scarlet Witch’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Scarlet Witch is sometimes considered one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. The reason for this is her Chaos Magic.

This magic lets alter reality. Though she has not fully mastered this, she can create her own version of reality and erase things, events, or people.

She can also shoot powerful energy beams from her hands. These are her only weapons, but they are all she needs–her energy beams were strong enough to destroy the Mind Stone, hold her own against Thanos, and kill Masters of the Mystic Arts and the Illuminati.

She can also create powerful illusions which render her opponents powerless or cause them to turn on each other. This was shown in Avengers: Age of Ultron when the Hulk turned on the other Avengers thanks to Wanda’s mental manipulation.

Finally, she can turn the powers of any opponent against them, causing them to defeat themselves. This makes her practically unbeatable, even by the most skilled opponents.

Weaknesses

Wanda experienced a lot of trauma in her life–from witnessing the deaths of her parents, to her brother, to having to kill Vision and, later, losing the family she created for herself.

PSYCHOTIC BREAK EXPLAINED | How Scarlet Witch became mentally unstable through repeated trauma

All of this trauma led to PTSD and mental instability. She has been described as a “glass cannon”, meaning that she can launch a nearly unbeatable offense but may be too mentally unstable to mount an effective defense.

What’s more, it takes her time to conjure the spells that enable her to use her most powerful abilities. If she is attacked before she can launch her own attack, she could possibly be defeated.

Wonder Woman vs. Scarlet Witch: Who Wins?

Wonder Woman & Scarlet Witch | Survivor

In terms of raw abilities, Scarlet Witch is more powerful than Wonder Woman. She could win this contest by altering reality and erasing Wonder Woman from existence.

However, Wonder Woman is intelligent and would not go into this fight unprepared. She would be aware of Scarlet Witch’s powers and may come up with a plan to strike before she can use them.

To have any chance at winning, Wonder Woman would have to incapacitate or kill Scarlet Witch before she could cast any spells. If she were able to catch Scarlet Witch by surprise, she could use her enhanced combat skills and weapons to gain the upper hand.

However, Scarlet Witch could still use her energy beams, which may be powerful enough to overwhelm Wonder Woman.

Since there are multiple ways Scarlet Witch could win this fight, it is most likely that she would prevail against Wonder Woman.

Conclusion

Scarlet Witch and Wonder Woman are powerful superheroes in their respective universes.

Though Wonder Woman has more mental toughness, combat training, and weapons at her disposal, Scarlet Witch is stronger in terms of magical ability. This would give her the edge in a one-on-one fight between these two characters.
