When Luke Skywalker sat down at the table of his aunt and uncle in A New Hope, he drank a unique drink called Blue milk. It evolved into an iconic reflection of him as a simple farmer and unaware Jedi.
Blue milk was a common drink on the planet Tatooine. What does it taste like? In Star Wars, it does not taste that great but in real life we may find it more pleasant. The same description could be used for Green milk too.

What is Blue Milk in Star Wars?
In the Star Wars galaxy, Blue milk is also called Bantha milk because it comes from female Banthas. It was a drink commonly consumed in the Outer Rim planets like Tatooine.
Audiences remember Luke Skywalker coming into the home of his aunt and uncle and drinking Blue milk while they discussed their new droids R2-D2 and C3PO.
Blue milk is also used to make dairy-like products like butter and cheese. While Blue milk is possibly the best-known drink in Star Wars, it is one among several non-alcohol drinks served in this galaxy.
Spotchka is a blue liquid drink made from sea creatures called krill. Ruby bliel is another drink found on Tatooine but with a more “gooey” taste that combines fruits and vegetables.
Blue Milk was used again in Attack of the Clones when Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala are served it while searching for Anakin’s mother. This drink became a regular item in the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels too and is sometimes called Tatooine milk.
Blue milk is a regular part of the Star Wars universe and has a distinctive taste.
What Does Blue Milk Actually Taste Like?
We may expect Blue Milk to have an Earth-like milk taste. According to the actor Mark Hamill it does but not a good milk taste.
Hamill said what he drank in the first movie was milk with food coloring. Yet, it tasted awful and he struggled to drink it without vomiting.
He stated that blue milk was “Long Life milk” that did not need refrigeration with blue food coloring added to it. He referred to the concoction as “warm and slightly sweet” and “oily” and he had to draw on his best acting to make it look enjoyable.
Star Wars Blue milk has a different taste when served here on Earth. One write-up indicates how this drink has a mix of coconut milk, rice milk, and fruit flavors. This beverage is also vegetarian-friendly.
Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park sells Blue milk. The drink consists of watermelon, dragon fruit, pineapple, orange, lime, and passion fruit. This variety of blue milk is thus more fruit flavored.
Blue and Green milk are served at this Disney destination and are “flavorful” and “kid-friendly.” Blue milk tends to have a berry taste, while Green is more “tropical.”
As one review indicated, both drinks have a rice and coconut base with more of a milkshake or smoothie taste. Both are dairy-free and distinguish themselves from the Star Wars movies.
What does Green Milk Taste like?
Green milk is another drink served in Star Wars and real life. Luke Skywalker drank Green milk in the sequel movie The Last Jedi. This milk comes not from Banthas but from female Thala-Sirens.
This Green milk is coconut milk that was later computer-edited to have a green color. We see Green milk in the scene when Luke is on Temple Island and Rey came to consult with him.
Luke draws the milk from a Thala-Siren and looks the part of a humble outcast while he drinks it. He seems to grimace from the taste but probably to add to the scene and his character, not reflect its true taste.
According to Mark Hamill, Green milk tasted much better than Blue milk and did not make him almost vomit.
Green milk was also served on the planet Batuu in Star Wars, known for its nutritious ingredients and used in alcoholic drinks.
The Taste of Blue and Green Milk
As we can see from this video, Luke’s character evolved while drinking Blue and Green milk. He went from unaware Jedi to a hardened, wise one while drinking these milks.
In the Star Wars galaxy, Blue milk did not have a good taste, but in the Disney world, it now has an enjoyable fruity one. Green milk was more palatable in the movies, yet also has a more enjoyable, vacation-like taste in our world.
Blue and Green milk have traveled well from a fictional galaxy to our real world.
