A Story of the Clan of Two
In May 2022, the Star Wars Celebration revealed The Mandalorian Season 3 trailer. It depicted Din Djarin and Grogu together with the Armorer’s voiceover about Mando being the Child’s father–making up “a clan of two.”
The trailer set up the drama and action of the third season, with Din Djarin potentially not being a Mandalorian any longer for removing his helmet, his N-1 Starfighter flying through asteroids, and looming conflict with Bo-Katan Kryze.
Audiences may remember Kryze as the female Mandalorian who laid claim to the planet Mandalore and served as a regent. She lost her position when the Empire rose, and a civil war ensued on Mandalore.
Kryze gained the Darksaber as a gift, but she lost it to Moff Gideon. As we saw in The Mandalorian, Kryze tried to reclaim the Darksaber, but Din Djarin won it in combat.
Whether Mando is the rightful holder of the Darksaber and leader of Mandalore will surely be part of the plot in Season 3.
This kind of action and suspense will be a central part of the storyline in Season 3. Yet, how Din Djarin and Grogu develop together will still take center stage and drive the plot forward.
Mando and Baby Yoda together will define the adventure to come more so than in the previous seasons.
Seeing them fly through space together is thrilling, but how their bond grows, diminishes, or moves in surprising ways will captivate audiences.
As this compilation reveals, The Mandalorian built the connection and bond between Grogu and Din Djarin since the series began. Therefore, expect it to reach center stage in Season 3.
Questions we can think about include: What is the promise and cost of not staying with Luke Skywalker? Can a clan of two maintain itself? If so, what will try to break it apart?
The Story and the Stars
Since the 2019 premiere of the series, Pedro Pascal defined the show after he initially worried whether his character would be compelling. Rest assured, the Mandalorian exceeded his expectations.
Not only Pascal’s acting, but fellow actors Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder, who also play the Mandalorian, brought forth a rich character who is tossed and turned with the action of the series.
A gunslinger turned hero is the base of the story, but we already saw Mando become more than that. We can envision a rich narrative as he takes on his fatherly role.
Pascal credits Wayne and Crowder for bringing the Mandalorian fully to life, calling them the “other two daddies.” This daddy aspect will play an important part in the storytelling in Season 3.
Djarin’s role as a father to Grogu should comprise twists, turns, and moments when audiences fear what could happen to them.
We may think of Episode 2 of Season 2, “The Passenger,” when Grogu is held hostage at knifepoint after Din Djarin and he were thrown from a speeder bike. This tense moment concluded quickly, but others were more severe.
For example, in Season 2 Episode 6 of Season 2, Baby Yoda was put in shackles. He had also been threatened with the Darksaber and after being taken prisoner by Moff Gideon. These tense moments could provide starting points for plot twists in Season 3.
Conflict and Plot Turns
As the Mandalorian shares the spotlight with his adopted son, Baby Yoda, the two will travel to Mandalore. Expect tension and conflict over the Darksaber and the leadership of the Mandalorians.
We can also anticipate how Grogu will capture attention for his decision not to join the Jedi. This was an exciting plot twist from the last season, and the show will build on it.
Grogu choosing Din Djarin over Luke Skywalker reflects a coming of age for the Child, and perhaps confidence in his powers.
We already saw great moments when Baby Yoda displayed his powers. His levitating the mudhorn, for example, first reflected his telekinesis. He also used a Force Choke on Cara Dune and Force Calming ability on the rancor in The Book of Boba Fett.
The Mandalorian Season 3 should further play up the Child’s force abilities, potentially leading to more questions about who is really in charge.
As Pedro Pascal commented, he loves the premise and uncertainty of “who’s protecting who,” and audiences will find this an engaging aspect of the story. This angle opens up intriguing points of development for Grogu, Din Djarin, and the entire season.
What Other Characters Will Drive the Story?
Beyond the clan of two, The Mandalorian Season 3 promises to reveal more about many other interesting characters in the show. As these characters solidify, they become more important to the storytelling.
On the dark side, we can look forward to the role Moff Gideon will play after the New Republic tried and imprisoned him. Perhaps we will learn about Gideon’s role in the Great Purge of Mandalore as he strives to recapture the Darksaber and maybe Grogu at the same time.
The Armorer will also continue to capture fans’ attention. She is bound to not only forge weapons and armor, but likely to continue as Din Djarin’s advisor. How will their alliance work out?
The Mandalorian Season 3
The Mandalorian Season 3 promises to delight audiences by revealing how Din Djarin, Grogu, and other characters evolve and shape the story.
Anticipate big surprises similar to Season 2’s inclusion of Luke Skywalker. Perhaps Darth Maul will come back, or Han Solo could overlap with the show.
Given recent programs, audiences could even encounter Obi-Wan Kenobi as a Force Ghost trying to help guide the Mandalorian and Grogu.
Overall, look for a lot to happen around the clan of two.
