Hugh Jackman, widely recognized for portraying Wolverine for years, recently embraced a significant change in his character’s iconic style and found it refreshing.
Previously, 20th Century Fox had updated Wolverine’s look for the X-Men films with a sleek black leather jacket, a departure from the original comic book style.
However, Marvel has revived the pro-comic version of Wolverine’s suit for the upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Sharing with Empire, Hugh Jackman talks about his new suit: “From the moment I put it (the suit) on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. ‘That’s him.’”
Jackman also highlighted that the film explores new aspects of Wolverine’s personality that movies have not previously shown.
“There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me,” Hugh said.
The Origins of Wolverine’s Yellow Suit
Wolverine first appeared in “The Incredible Hulk” #180 in 1974, sporting his now-iconic yellow and blue costume. Initially, his mask had a slightly different design from the one we knew.
When Wolverine joined the X-Men in “Giant Size-X-Men” #1 the next year, he donned the well-known yellow and blue suit with the larger mask that fans recognize today.
For two decades, Marvel enthusiasts passionately urged for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to wear this classic yellow and blue costume in the X-Men films.
However, when 20th Century Fox released their X-Men trilogy featuring Wolverine, they opted for a distinct interpretation of the yellow-spandex comic suit.
Why did 20th Fox Cen’s adaptation have a black leather suit?
Initially, the black leather suit in the X-Men trilogy movies was designed to appeal to a broader audience.
The filmmakers felt that to attract more viewers, using black leather would be an effective strategy.
At the time, it was believed that audiences might not be ready for comic-accurate costumes, so the black leather was seen as a more modern and less dated alternative.
Throughout the X-Men trilogy and Wolverine’s standalone movies, despite a few minor changes, one constant remained: Jackman never touched any version of Wolverine’s classic costume.
The traditional yellow suit only made a brief appearance in a scene from “The Wolverine” (2013), but this scene was deleted from the final cut.
In “Logan” (2017), Director James Mangold considered introducing the yellow suit into the film; however, he ultimately felt that he could not envision the older version of Logan wearing it.
The long-awaited moment is set to occur in “Deadpool 3”, where Jackman will reprise his role as Logan. It has been confirmed that he will finally sport the hero’s iconic comic book look.
