Apart from Mjolnir, Which Other Weapons Has Thor Used?

Apart from Mjolnir, Which Other Weapons Has Thor Used?

We all know Mjolnir is Thor’s most famous and iconic weapon, but what about the rest of his arsenal?

His collection, featured in both comics and movies, is vast and unique.

Buckle up; let’s discover the powerful hidden gems Thor has armed himself with for battle.

1. Stormbreaker

If you’ve seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from Phase III onwards, Thor’s new weapon, Stormbreaker, won’t surprise you.

Stormbreaker first appeared in ‘The Mighty Thor’ #339 comic, establishing its mythic roots well before its introduction in the MCU.

This axe was crafted from the ancient and rare Uru metal from the Old Moon, and boasts unparalleled durability and power.

In the MCU, this weapon features a handle made from Groot’s arm, but the fact is its version in the comics was much more low-key with its traditional hammer form.

Besides, in the movies, Stormbreaker symbolizes Thor’s self-discovery since the moment he let Thanos eradicate half the universe.

Interestingly, the significance of Stormbreaker differs markedly between the comics and the movies.

In the original comics, Beta Ray Bill, after demonstrating his worthiness, is granted Stormbreaker by Odin as a token of respect.

On the other hand, on the cinema’s canvas, Stormbreaker emerges as Thor’s chosen weapon for the battles that lie ahead

2. Jarnbjorn

Everyone got their own starter-pack, so does Thor. Before Mjolnir, it was Jarnbjorn aka The Wrecker of Worlds.

Jarnbjorn’s first appearance in “Thor: God of Thunder #1” published in November 2012.

It is an Asgardian traditional battle axe, crafted by Dwarves – same creator of Mjolnir.

Thor wielded Jarnbjorn against powerful foes like Frost Giants, cutting through almost anything and taking a blueprint of his brute strength.

Notably, the axe used to be enchanted by Thor with his own blood, allowing him to pierce the near-invulnerable Celestial armor.

3. Megingjord

Did you know that since the iconic power of Thor comes from his weaponry, there is another secret strength lying beneath his armory: Megingjord, aka the Belt of Strength.

Making its Marvel debut in “Journey Into Mystery” #91 in February 1963, this magical belt originally comes from Norse myths.

Interestingly, MCU viewers rarely see this belt, as it’s overshadowed by weapons like Mjolnir or Stormbreaker (or maybe the director just doesn’t want to ruin his fancy costume).

In the comics, this enchanted belt doubles Thor’s power, first used against the magician Sandu and Loki’s schemes.

The Megingjord belt boosts Thor’s strength in crucial battles but demands immense stamina, making it suited only for a god’s resilience like Thor’s.

4. Gungnir

Last but not least, despite those powerful weapons, Gungnir – Odin’s spear and the symbol of Asgard’s authority – elevates Thor to the next level.

Originally crafted by Dwarves, its ornate design stands out. Its magical properties, like unerring accuracy, underscore its importance beyond just a weapon.

In “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor inherits Odin’s authority via the Gungnir spear.

Yet it’s his acceptance of his kingship role that truly amplifies his power and wisdom.

Just look at the way he failed in front of Hela when fighting with the spear but then still saved Asgardian from the Ragnarok. It spoke itself!

Wrap Things Up

As Odin told Thor in Ragnarok: “You’re not the god of hammers; you’re the God of Thunder.”

Our journey today has shown that Thor’s abilities extend far beyond just Mjolnir, encompassing weapons like Stormbreaker, Jarnbjorn, Megingjord, and Gungnir.

Each weapon symbolizes not only his journey and heritage but also his legacy as a god among heroes.
