If you believe all MCU superheroes were “created” equally powerful in the movies, let me tell you how freaking that notion is.
In fact, there are three notable instances where our superheroes are depicted as extremely powerful (in the movies themselves, not just in comics), yet they still experience significant nerfing later on.
Let’s examine each case in detail and find out why!
Contents
Thor
Leading our list is Odin’s son, the Asgardian God of Thunder – Thor.
Thanks to his Asgardian physiology, Thor possesses extraordinary strength, which allows him to survive in extreme conditions such as the vacuum of space and endure prolonged combat.
Wielding Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, Thor’s abilities peak: Mjolnir controls lightning, while Stormbreaker boosts combat skills, allowing him to channel his powers more intensely.
These capabilities positioned him as one of the few who could push Thanos near to his limit, even when the Mad Titan wielded the Infinity Gauntlet.
However, by the beginning of “Endgame,” Thor is battling depression, leading to a secluded life in New Asgard.
His physical appearance shifts dramatically; he gains weight and appears unkempt, quickly earning the moniker “Fat Thor” from fans.
Despite eventually overcoming his depression and aiding the Avengers in reversing the snap, he struggles against Thanos and is beaten up like a child, showing signs of vulnerability.
In “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it appears Thor’s might is returning. Everything seems set right, yet the plot doesn’t fully align with his regained power.
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange’s powers are impressive, ranging from Kamar-Taj spellcasting to wielding the Cloak of Levitation for flight and the Eye of Agamotto, which once held the Time Stone.
His abilities allow him to travel between dimensions and create portals, crucial in battles like the one against Thanos.
Known as the Supreme Sorcerer and former guardian of the Time Stone, Strange’s prowess seemed boundless, once gathering forces across the universe to bring Thanos to his knees.
Sounds incredible, doesn’t he? However, post-Infinity Saga, Strange’s demeanor has shifted noticeably.
In “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he’s outmaneuvered by a teenage Spider-Man using mathematics, a surprising vulnerability.
As the onetime Supreme Sorcerer, his hasty decision to cast a risky spell leads to unintended consequences, sparking a crisis across infinite universes.
This misstep becomes more apparent in “Multiverse of Madness,” where he’s largely outclassed by Scarlet Witch, spending most of the film evading danger rather than confronting it directly.
Hulk
Hulk’s core powers are undeniable: super-strength, incredible durability, and regenerative healing.
Historically, his raw strength was his hallmark, once stopping Chitauri Leviathans with a single punch. He’s even matched Thanos in hand-to-hand combat, though Thanos outsmarted him with tactics.
Notably, Hulk’s strength surges as his anger escalates.
However, his prowess diminishes starting in “Avengers: Infinity War.” After arriving on Earth, Hulk retreats, avoiding any fight throughout the movie.
In the Wakanda battle, he resurfaces in the HulkBuster suit—a poor substitute for his natural might.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Bruce attempts a balance, merging with Hulk to maintain intelligence while controlling his strength. As a result, Smart Hulk comes to the town.
So, you think an intelligent and strong giant is badass? Not there yet.
This version, while intelligent and strong, lacks the raw, untamed ferocity that previously amplified his power.
Hulk might look smarty, but lacks a raw persona – which previously mentioned could boost his power significantly.
What do you guys think? Should any of these characters appear less aggressive than they used to? Or is there a case that I missed? Share your thoughts!
